1 May to 11 May

Drawing on the biblical story of the Judgement of Solomon and a 14th century Chinese play, The Caucasian Chalk Circle is rich in lore and is of exemplary clarity and dialectic beauty.

The play follows the story of the peasant girl Grusha, who rescues the Governor's infant son and flees across a war-torn country in search of safety, and the corruptible, comic and politically incorrect judge Azdak, who devises a scenario to settle the dispute on who is the rightful mother of the child.

The Caucasian Chalk Circle retains astonishing relevance by transporting us to a world that is nothing other than what we know, the world of unreason, of disorder and of injustice.
