Certificate IV in Live Production and Technical Services

Our Certificate IV in Live Production & Technical Services (CUA40415) is designed to train students as multi-skilled theatre technicians. It encompasses training in a broad range of skills, including leadership in a performing arts environment. Subjects include audio, lighting and staging, with electives in acting and stage management.

Brisbane Arts Theatre is a registered training organisation (RTO 32424).

Course Content

Students will undertake training in core technical areas of theatre, including lighting, audio and production management, while learning the skills necessary to lead a team of technicians. All students will learn the role of the Stage Manager, including overseeing the rehearsal process through to live productions and the development and implementation of work plans. Students will also learn how to install and operate staging elements, and work effectively in a fast-paced theatrical environment.

Classroom & Location

As a student of Brisbane Arts Theatre, you'll be based at our performance venue on Petrie Terrace, with full access to the venue throughout your course. This is the only course of its kind in Brisbane; no others offer unlimited use of a fully operational theatre. Throughout your studies, you may be given the opportunity to perform in real productions.

The theatre is centrally located on Petrie Terrace, a short walk from Roma Street Station or Normanby Busway Station. On-street parking is available, while full-time students are eligible for concession cards, which are valid within the TransLink network.

Recognised prior learning

Experienced theatre technicians are able to apply for recognition of prior learning (RPL). Depending on your experience, should you meet the required criteria of a unit, you may be given exemption or partial exemption for that unit. This means that an experienced sound and lighting technician may only need to complete a little over half of the course. Compliant administration of RPL is substantial. In order to work through this, a student should commence this process at least six months prior to commencement of the course.

All classes are held between 9.30am and 6pm on Mondays each week during term. Work during productions is also required on selected evenings and weekends.

Course Length

This course is studied full time over one year.
