BYDE is a creative development programme designed for intermediate level performers to have the opportunity to work with industry professionals to expand their range across acting, singing and movement. It focuses strongly on the audition process and aims to develop the performer’s audition technique and skill set.
Auditions are now open for our 2021 intake. Registration is essential. Please click here to be redirected to the audition page.
Our Brisbane Youth Drama Ensemble is an opportunity for young and emerging artists to further develop and fine tune their performance skills. In this performance development programme, the BYDE students will work towards a nationally recognised skillset (CUASS00017) over the course of their studies. Awarded upon completion of BYDE, the nationally recognised skill set provides students with nationally accredited units that can be used in further performing arts studies as RPL (Recognised Prior Learning).
Primarily trained and assessed by our Artistic Director, John Boyce, BA BCA Creative Arts Theatre (Acting) students will explore a multitude of acting and singing techniques, and how they can apply themselves to be a successful performer. Classes will focus on how to succeed in auditions, the acting process and the techniques that come with being a well-rounded performer, as well as monologues, duologues and script work.
BYDE graduates will also leave the course with a professionally made stagecraft showreel and portfolio headshots.
Students will have the opportunity to perform at the student showcase at the end of terms two and four, allowing them to display the skills they have gained from the course to friends and family. Brisbane Arts Theatre is an active performance venue and an iconic theatre company in Brisbane. Aside from the two student showcases, each year, we stage successful Children’s Theatre and Mainhouse seasons that we encourage our BYDE students to audition for.
BYDE intake is strictly limited and requires a successful audition, open only to those students entering grades 10 – 12 in 2021. Auditions only take place once a year, and the programme has a maximum capacity of 15 students. As a performance ensemble, students are encouraged to actively participate in opportunities that arise through a Brisbane Arts Theatre production season. This may include onstage and/or backstage commitment. Students are expected to maintain an 80% attendance rate in order to keep their space in the BYDE classes (with exception to appropriate circumstance).
Auditions are held at the end of the year, prior to admission. This usually takes place between October and November. Keep an eye on the enrolment button, and our Facebook page for the audition announcement!
BYDE is a smaller group of students, allowing tutors to personalise the lesson, honing in on the skills each student has, or may need improvement on. BYDE is a slightly more advanced experience, focusing on the audition process for teens who already have a diverse experience in theatre.
Students in the Brisbane Youth Drama Ensemble will also receive a nationally recognised skillset.
